Tahoe Nugget #14:

Kokanee salmon

Yesterday I led a group of people on a field trip to Taylor Creek (on the southwest shore of Lake Tahoe). This time of year the human-introduced Kokanee salmon (these are land-locked within the basin) are spawning, swimming up Taylor Creek looking to deposit fertilized eggs in suitable gravel beds. Although these fish are relatively small in Tahoe (about 12 to 14 inches max), it is always an inspiring and close up natural experience. This photo was taken yesterday in the "most excellent" stream profile chamber, which is part of a short enjoyable loop trail walk through an aspen grove and across an open wetlands area that boasts raptors like the bald eagle. The angry-looking Kokanee males sporting color in this shot appear like tough guys looking for some action
